 ST EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM FEATURING PROFESSOR IRA SHOR\n\nThe Montclair C
 ommunity Pre-K (MCPK) and United Way of North Essex-Montclair Communit
 y Fund (United Way) will conduct a program for parents and educators o
 n November 16, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. at The United Way Building, 60 South 
 Fullerton Avenue, in Montclair, NJ. The event will feature education e
 xpert, Dr. Ira Shor, as its speaker and is entitled \"All the Kids Abo
 ve Average: Learning in the Children's Zone.\" The program is free and
  open to the public. No advance registration is required.\n\nProgram F
 ocus\nThe title of this program borrows Garrison Keillor's declaration
  about Lake Wobegon, his fictive hometown, where \"the women are stron
 g, the men are good-looking, and all the kids are above average.\" Wha
 t would it mean to educate kids so that \"all are above average\" and 
 intellectually stimulated, with none left out, left behind, or left bo
 red? To answer this question, Dr. Shor will describe the work of educa
 tional and developmental theorists and explain how to apply their work
  to today's classrooms. The event will be of value for parents who are
  curious about the best environment for their children's educational g
 rowth and to teachers and administrators who are looking to enhance th
 e work they already do. The program is part of a series sponsored by t
 he MCPK as part of its ongoing commitments to educational excellence a
 nd to serving as a mentor program and community resource in the field 
 of early childhood education. United Way of North Essex has a commitme
 nt to creating opportunities for a better life for everyone in the com
 munity and knows that a good education is one of the building blocks t
 o achieve a good life.\n\nProfessor Shor\nIra Shor is a pioneer in the
  field of critical education who has been experimenting with learning 
 methods for over thirty years. Dr. Shor has authored numerous works in
 cluding \"Empowering Education: Critical Teaching for Social Change\" 
 and \"When Students Have Power: Negotiating Authority in a Critical Pe
 dagogy\". Dr. Shor received his BA at the University of Michigan and h
 is MA and PhD from the University of Wisconsin. He is currently a prof
 essor in the English Department at The City University Graduate Center
  and The College of Staten Island/CUNY. Ira Shor is a resident of Mont
 clair and serves on the Committee for Educational Excellence at the Mo
 ntclair Community Pre-K.\n\nThe MCPK\nThe Montclair Community Pre-K an
