SUMMARY:Student-led Conferences
DESCRIPTION:Within the broad spectrum of strategies associated with fo
 rmative assessment is the goal of helping students become independent 
 learners who share responsibility for their own progress. Students at 
 all grade levels can and should learn to assess their own work and the
  work of their peers. One powerful strategy for helping students becom
 e independent learners is student-led conferences in which the student
 s lead the conference with the parents. In a student-led conference, s
 tudents facilitate a discussion of their work, often organized in a po
 rtfolio collection, and share with parents goals they have set for the
 ir future learning.\n\nThis presentation will address the following qu
 estions about student-led conferences:\n* What are the benefits of stu
 dent-led conferences? For students? For parents? For teachers?\n* What
  is an effective model for student-led conferences?\n* What does a stu
 dent-led conference look like?\n* How do teachers and students prepare
  for student-led conferences?\n* How are showcase portfolios used duri
 ng a student-led conference?\n* How can the teacher evaluate the effec
 tiveness of student-led conferences?\n\nWorkshop participants will rec
 eive a packet of tools that can be used to begin the process of studen
