Event Description

Title: Using C-SPAN Videos in the Social Studies Classroom-Supporting Classroom Deliberations with Primary Sources

Date: December 11th, 2014

Time: 4:30 - 6:45 PM

Location: Montclair State University-Student Center, Room 207

Instructor: Mr. Brian Rock

Through this workshop, teachers will learn about the breadth of C-SPAN's video programming, sample relevant videos for use in class, and participate in an a classroom deliberation.

The workshop will begin with a quick overview of the C-SPAN network and its video programming. The presenter will provide a quick history of the network, explain the mission statement of the network, and describe some of the types of video content that are available.

Next, the presenter will describe five ways that C-SPAN programming can be incorporated into a social studies class. Each method will be accompanied by an appropriate video clip, a brief discussion, and sample guiding questions.

Finally, the presenter will model a lesson on a controversial issue. Participants will hear from experts in a collection of videos to learn about the background, the pros, and the cons of the issue. Using this knowledge, the participants will participate in a mock Congressional hearing and deliberate the issue.

The sample lesson is intended for use in a high school classroom, but many elements of the workshop can be used or adapted for use in a middle school classroom. It would be beneficial for participants to have their own laptop, tablet, or mobile device, as well as headphones. However, these are not required and adjustments will be made based on available technology.
