In this course, we will examine and discuss the schooling experiences of students from diverse socio-economic, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds and the qualities of teachers, teaching, and schooling that foster their learning. We will critically examine our own assumptions and perceptions about sociocultural identity, and understand how these beliefs shape our perceptions of ourselves and other people. We will also plan activities that reflect multiple ways of perceiving and interpreting the world and discuss strategies to help teachers develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to successfully teach children of all backgrounds and experiences (including social, cultural, racial, disability, sexual orientation, and linguistic diversities). This mini-course fulfills the requirement for Culturally Responsive Teaching.
